PS130 PA's Annual Benefit for the Arts May 27th

Dear Parents:

We will be having our Annual Benefit for the Arts Fundraiser to raise money to support our school's music and performance arts programs on Friday, May 27th, 2016 at Jing Fong Restaurant located on 20 Elizabeth Street New York NY 10013.

The arts program enables our children to be more confident about who they are and what they can become in the future. The programs help the children develop the skills and confidence they need to pursue their dreams and it is one of the reasons our students are so successful in middle school and beyond.

Please contribute by buying an ad in our Journal, making a monetary donation or donating a prize for our Raffle and Auction at the benefit. All of this will go towards supporting our programs for our children. All donations made to our PA are tax deductible since we are a not-for-profit 501 (c) organization.

Your generosity, no matter how big or small, will make a big difference in the lives of the children in this community!
Please reserve the date for our annual fundraiser!

On behalf of all the children, we thank you in advance for supporting the vision.

If there is any questions, please feel free to come to the PA Room 101.

Green Team

Hello Parents:

Our Fourth Grade teacher Ms. Nicklas has worked with the community to keep the our school to safe energy ,water conservation and waste management.

PS 130 M.  Sustainability Mission Statement (2015-2016)

P.S. 130 Hernando De Soto School has been working vigorously to promote public awareness of sustainability in our school community. We will continue to implement our recycling program with more color-coded bins in all the classrooms, hallways, offices, playrooms, and  auditorium for recycling paper, cardboard, glass, metal, plastic and organic wastes. Our Green Team will bring more and more interested teachers, students and families into our monitoring and stewardship.   All the members in our community -- school administrators, teachers, school staff, custodian staff, students and families, are committed to keeping our school a "zero-waste" school and everybody will be working together towards the DOE’s goals for energy and water conservation, waste management, ecology, and the integration of sustainability concepts into the curricula.
We will
-- provide professional development to teachers on sustainability
-- promote sustainability literacy and practices in our core curriculum
-- build up school green team with more interested teachers, students, and parents
-- encourage creative ways to reuse, reduce, and recycle wastes
-- set up evaluation tools to audit and improve energy conservation (water and
             electricity) in our school building
-- maintain our outdoor gardens and connect students with plants in our urban
             ecosystem.
-- create a safe, healthy, green environment for our community.

PS 130M De Soto School Earn An " All American Distinction School"

Dear Parents:

We just receive good new from Mrs. Woo informing MR. Fong  that our school had earn an " All American Schools " Distinction.

Today's Daily News has an article that talks about how there are great schools in NYC and how they compare to schools around the world: http://www.nydailynews.com/opinion/vigdor-mcgee-excellence-aplenty-nyc-public-schools-article-1.2399117.

In the article, it says the following:

"If a school receives an A grade, it means its students are on par with schools from countries at the top of the international education rankings, like South Korea and Finland. Across the five boroughs, 30% of all elementary and middle schools earn an A, beating the national average of 26.5% as well as the New York State average of 22%.

SchoolGrades also draws special attention to what we call “All-American” schools. These are schools that are among the top 4.3% in the nation and serve an economically disadvantaged student body (schools with a free/reduced-lunch percentage at or above the national average of 48%). Only 579 schools out of the more than 70,000 nationwide earn this distinction. Of the 73 All-American schools in New York State, 72 are in New York City."

CONGRATULATIONS....PS 130 MANHATTAN IS ONE OF THOSE 579 SCHOOLS NATIONWIDE TO EARN THE "ALL AMERICAN SCHOOLS" DISTINCTION!!! (please see the attachment I compiled for details).  WHAT A GREAT ACCOMPLISHMENT!!!

As your former principal, I can't tell you how proud I am of all of you as you continue to bring honor to our school's name and to our community!

BRAVO!!!

My very best wishes for continued success!!!
Mrs. Woo
