Dear Parents and Guardians of Pre-K to 5 Graders,

The Parents Association plays an important role in our school by supporting the initiatives of the Principal and administration. The PA serves as the main information center for many parents unfamiliar with the Board of Education and our school. We are responsible for the many annual fundraising events, school parties, book sales, workshops and school fairs; which helps pays for all the art programs and administrative things that are not covered by the Board of Education or Department of Education (DOE).  None of this would be possible without your participation and support.

There will be a Parents Association General Meeting for all in the auditorium on Thursday, February 1, 2024 at 8:45AM.  The topics to be discussed are:

  • Principal welcoming
  • Reading and Approval of Minutes
  • PA Financials: January Treasurer’s Report
  • Upcoming Events

Bake Sale – Wednesday, February 7
Lunar New Year – Saturday, February 10
Lunar New Year Show – Thursday, February 15
Lion Dance Welcoming New Year – Friday, February 16, PS 130M main entrance 5:30 PM
      Mid-Winter Recess (school closed) – Monday, February 19 – Friday, February 23
Chinese New Year Parade –  Sunday, February 25 - 5th grade Lion Dance Club

  • Principal's remarks/announcements
  • Any parent issues, questions or proposals

Please join our meetings!  Your participation and support play a vital role to our school and students.    All PS130M parents and guardians are welcome!  See you all at the meetings, held on the first Thursday of every month.

Thank you.
PS 130M Parents Association

Parenting & 2024 New Year's Resolutions: Children Often Mirror Their Parents Habits

New Year's resolutions are often aimed at improving bad habits - whether making plans for a better diet and nutrition, or a regular fitness plan, to reduced screen time vs. more time outdoors in nature. One of the key responsibilities of a healthy parent is to role model good habits that lead to day-to-day productivity and success vs. bad habits that are counter-productive or unproductive. Whether teaching good habits like the importance of dental hygiene and brushing your teeth twice a day to the benefits of drinking water vs. sugary drinks/sodas, there are so many ways parents can teach children new and healthy habits. New Year's resolutions are a great way to get the ball rolling, so to speak.

Below are some some articles and resources to inspire your ideas for new and healthy habits for the whole family.

MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY IS JANUARY 15TH

Martin Luther King day is observed the 3rd Monday in January. It is a federal holiday established in 1983 after years of activism and advocacy by Dr. King supporters. MLK Day is a day to celebrate and remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who was a leading spokesperson for non-violent activism during the Civil Rights Movement, which protested racial discrimination in state and federal laws. He is remembered for his message of equality, justice and social unity. MLK Jr. Park, located adjacent to the Henry Street Settlement historic headquarters at 265 Henry Street, NY, NY was established in 1993 and is free and open to the public. Come visit!

How to Celebrate Martin Luther King Day 2024?

Celebrating Martin Luther King Day can be done in various meaningful ways that honor Dr. King’s legacy and promote his ideals. Here are some ways to celebrate:

Attend Commemorative Events: Many communities organize parades, lectures, and other events that celebrate Dr. King’s life and message.

Engage in Community Service: Participate in volunteer activities or service projects that benefit your community, aligning with Dr. King’s commitment to social justice.

Educational Activities: Learn more about the civil rights movement and Dr. King’s work through books, documentaries, or visits to relevant museums and historical sites.

Reflect on Social Justice: Take time to reflect on the progress made in the fight for civil rights and consider how you can contribute to a more just society.

Spread Awareness: Share Dr. King’s messages of equality, love, and nonviolence on social media to inspire others.

Parents’ Association opening & Review. Joseph Li – Co-President

Thank you for coming to our December general meeting. No need for Chinese translation today. Spanish translation will be in the back.

Joe – welcomes our principal Mr. Fong.

Principal remarks –

Mr. R. Fong – Good Morning, we wish everyone a happy holiday and we want to thank everyone for joining us today.

  1. SLT meeting – I was telling everyone at the SLT meeting earlier that we don’t have Title I designation status this year. All schools that didn’t fill out lunch forms lost their Title I designation status. They technically gave us the Title I funding for this year only, even though they didn’t request us to fill out these forms till this year. But the DOE will be watching the said Title I funds they gave us. That’s why this year we asked everyone to fill out lunch forms to see if we can regain our Title I status for the upcoming school year. We need 60/65% to regain our Title I status.

  2. Wit & Wisdom – Wit and Wisdom will be rolled out in the Fall 2024 in district 2. We will be doing some piloting of the program this Spring as a District. For Math, we use the Eureka Squared math curriculum, but as a district, we do not all use the same Math Curriculum. I will send more information when available.

  3. Our District got some grant money to pay for afterschool programs. CPC received grant money for 12 students.

Thank you to the PA for the tireless fundraising.
