Academic Affairs Committee for a Math Path Meeting:

Hello, District 2 Parents,

We are the co-founders of the CEC District 2 Academic Affairs Committee, which we started with the purpose of improving academic offerings in our D2 elementary and middle schools.

At the start of this CEC term, we met with Superintendent Kelly McGuire and Deputy Superintendent Kelly Shannon to discuss the lack of advanced math programs in our elementary and middle schools and the real-world impact that has on D2 students and families.

We shared data and parent testimony about how D2 students, especially STEM focused students, can be at a disadvantage in high school relative to students who have had more opportunities for advanced math instruction through 8th grade. We held an online panel discussion with Professor Laura Giuliano, Professor of Economics at the University of California Santa Cruz, and parents to review existing and preview upcoming data regarding the benefits of offering classes where students are grouped by ability.

We have pointed out to the District 2 leadership that families routinely pay thousands of dollars to access accelerated math programs at places such as Russian School of Math, Kumon, Khan Academy, Tutorverse, and with private tutors. With a $38B school budget in NYC(!) parents should not have to pay out-of-pocket for after-school, accelerated math instruction. In addition to the cost, which many families cannot afford, it also means less time for kids to do after-school activities, sports, arts and enjoy family time.

We are now asking that District 2 launch several pilot programs at schools throughout our district to help students who are ready for faster paced and more advanced math instruction in elementary and middle school. And we want your help.

Please join us via zoom for the upcoming Academic Affairs Committee meeting on February 10, 2025, and consider signing up to be a Math Liaison for your school. We will be seeking a meeting with District 2 leadership to pursue pilot programs in the 2025-2026 academic year and we want parents to be there and be involved.
