Dear parents, grandparents, guardians and education activists,
As you may have heard, the UFT and the DOE reached an agreement for reopening schools safely. School will start for all students on Sept. 21. The delay will allow time for teachers to plan and for schools to put in place robust safety measures that will protect our school communities.
The new school reopening plan meets the safety criteria put forth by independent medical experts. Schools must pass a 50-point safety checklist, including the availability of masks, a room-by-room review of ventilation effectiveness and an isolation room. There will also be random sampling and COVID-19 testing of 10 to 20 percent of children and adults in each school building on a monthly basis.
To hear more details about the safety plan and what to expect this coming school year, please join us for our final summer parent workshop this Thursday. We'll have a conversation about the reopening plan with UFT Vice President for Non-DOE Members Anne Goldman, a registered nurse and leader of the Federation of Nurses. Anne Goldman will share her medical expertise and knowledge of the reopening plan. Other UFT officials will also be on-hand to shed light on the upcoming school year and answer your questions.
- Date: Thursday, Sept. 3
- Time: 5 to 6 p.m.
- Registar at: https://uft.wufoo.com/forms/q8cpuj81y8tfos/
This workshop will be held via Zoom. On the day of the workshop, you'll receive an email with instructions on how to join.
This event will be a webinar, so only the scheduled speakers can address the audience in real time. However, you may submit questions for the speakers during the conversation using the Zoom chat box.
I hope you will join us!
In unity,
