You’re our village to help us
fundraise. As you know our school enrollment is lower now than it used to be so
its harder to fundraise. So anything helps support our kids.
If you have any suggestions
or ideas, please let us know.
Thank you!
7. Principal’s remarks
a. Mr. Renny Fong – Thank you
everyone for being here. Good news, last month I said that chess would cost us
$15,000 for 10 sessions for every K-5 student. It starts with the lower grade then the upper
grade. Each kid will get a login to play chess. They asked if we could host one
Sunday a month at our school. An estimate of 20 schools were here, an estimate
of 170 to 180 students competing. Our kids have been doing chess for a couple
of years, but we weren’t winning medals & doing divisions. ICN was so
grateful that we’re hosting that they even offered and paid for their own
permits. They were so grateful that they even offered to give our school free
chess. We are lucky to have found ICN. Chess used to only be for G&T but
now its for all our students. Even during the pandemic, they gave us free chess
kits. Thank you to the parents and parents like Jenny for pushing chess.
b. DESSA survey – wanted to let
the parents know what it is. The handout is a sample of what DESSA is. Full DESSA
is 72 questions. These are the questions the teachers will use to assess the children.
This is not to assess their mental
health but to see where they need help. It’s also used to help describe the
child’s feelings. It’s hard to describe your feelings; the 5 boxes are there to
help describe the frequency of the behaviors. That’s why we wanted to show you
the screeners. All students are different. I have a 16-year-old and a 6-year-old,
the 16-year-old used to say hi to everyone. My 6-year-old is more shy. We teach them to say hi because if not they could
be viewed as being rude. DESSA results will be available 12/2/22; you can ask
the teacher for their report.
c. This Sunday we will turn the
clock back an extra hour.
d. Tuesday – no school for
Election Day. They will be using the playroom. Attendance will not be taken because
there will be no remote learning like last year.
e. Friday – school will be
closed for Veterans Day.
f.
Last
townhall meeting you can review the video, so you don’t have to listen to me to
talk about it today. It’s about learning to let go.
If you have any questions or need help, my door is open.
Parent comment – last year was there a drop in test scores.
Mr. Fong answers
– the ELA – there is no pattern, everything dips and raises, it’s always
different. If your child needs help, please come and ask, my door is always
open. We always want to help our students.
Parent question – ICN – chess – school students learning chess in school?
Mr. Fong answers – yes, the
kids will be learning chess in school during school hours, like our arts
programs.
Thank
you!
Closing
time – 9:13am
– next general meeting is Thursday 12/1/22
