Minutes to PS 130M General Meeting September 18, 2025

Attendance: Lisa Wong, Yvonne Moy, Amy Hu, Joseph Li, Angela Mui, Tammy Yin, Mr. Fong, Ms. Thomas, Carmen, Yuki, and 36 other participants (see sign in sheet, in person)

Meeting Commence: 8:50am Joseph Li – Co-President

Joe – Good morning, welcome everyone, I’m Joseph Li, I have a 5th grader. Glad to see a lot of new and familiar faces.

Mr. Fong – Welcome families, I was at the SLT meeting earlier and in Money Inc magazine they list the top 30 schools in NYC, and we made it onto the list! We are grateful to everyone.

Mr. Fong - We have one of the best support systems, thanks to our wonderful PA. We really couldn’t have done it without Lisa, Yvonne, and the PA board members.

This year we have the Yondr pouches; every school has some kind of system to store electronic devices. It was made into NY State law that there are no personal electronic devices allowed from bell to bell. Even smart watches will be placed into these pouches. There will these Yondr pouches magnets to open them by the front door and in them main office. The students will keep the pouches and devices locked away in their own book bags.

Lunch forms will be passed out, please complete and submit them, they will help determine if we can requalify as a Title 1 school, which gives us extra funding. From last year’s lunch forms, we are not at Title 1 school. Thank you everyone.

Joe – we will now hold a special election; we have 3 open positions. We have a co-president seat and 2 co- vice president seats open. You can nominate someone or self-nominate.

For the co-president position I believe you must have 1 yr experience with the PA but we will double check this and get back to you and for the Co- vice president positions you do not.

Would anyone like to self- nominate themselves or nominate someone for these open positions? You can think about it and enter your name at the PA room later. We will have a vote at our next general meeting.

For the co-vice president position, you would assist the president in all their responsibilities, but as a board member a title is a title, we do not stop with just our responsibilities, we help wherever is needed.

We are all unpaid volunteers
Parent – what is the time commitment?

Joe – There isn’t really any time commitment, but we do help out on all school events, parties and setup.

In June we voted for the other positions of the PA, such as the President, treasury, and secretary positions.

Parent – how do we become a part of the board?

You just have to have a child who attends the school. You don’t have to be a part of the board to help. We need volunteers all the time for events for the school.

Parents’ Association opening & Review.

Here are last month’s meeting minutes to be reviewed and approved. They will be posted on the PA Blog site.

  1. These are the minutes for review and to be approved from our last meeting in June; 6 people approved the minutes; minutes are placed on record. Thank you!

  2. This is the treasury report for review and approval; 7 people approved the treasury report. The Treasury report is placed on record. Thank you!

    These are the ongoing fundraising throughout the school year.

         -  Scholastic Book Fair
         -  Spiritwear Clothes
         -  Holiday shows
         -  Benefit Gala
         -  Mother’s Day
         -  Handmade Bead Sale

    All the fundraising money goes to our kids and the art programs.

If you have any ideas, please let us know and we will see if we have the manpower to do it.

PA dues went out this week.

2. The PA Funds these Programs and more

Here are all the costs of the arts programs the PA funds, as you see all the art programs are not cheap. All our fundraising efforts go back to the school and our students.

         -  Third Street Music School – Violin (3rd grade & Advance)
         -  Ballroom Dancing -
         -  School Chorus – Voices of 130
         -  Spirit of PS 130 – Fife & Drum
         -  Young People Chorus (YPC)
         -  PS. 130 Lion Dance
         -  Rosie’s Theater Kids
    We have a lot of art programs if not more than any other schools.

As you can see in the pictures we have dance, singing, lion dance and parties, here was last year’s Halloween party.
  • The PA also pays for some of the school supplies & special events such as: 
  • -  Air conditioners and repairs
  • -  Office copier, toners, computers, and supplies
  • -  Student appreciation events (we currently have 500+ students)
3. Upcoming events – October 2025.
         -  Bake Sale – Wednesday, October 8, 2025
         -  School Photo Day – Thursday, October 9 & Friday, October 10, 2025
         -  General Meeting – Thursday, October 16, 2025
         -  Cherrydale Candy fundraising sale due - Friday, October 24, 2025
         -  Scholastic book fair - Friday, October 24 to Thursday, October 30, 2025
         -  Halloween Dance party - Friday, October 31, 2025
        We will need volunteers for Photo Day & book fair. Signup sheets are in the back and will be on the PA room door. We need volunteers to help with photo day because we help make the children smile and straighten their hair and most importantly, we make sure they do no cry.

Parent – general meetings are at 8:45am?

Joe – Yes, they are usually the 1st Thursday of every month and bake sales are usually the 1st Wednesday of every month unless there is a conflict.

Parent – last year the photos were intensely photoshopped, are we using the same vendor?

Joe – yes, if you have any issues with your child’s photo please let us know and we try our best to fix it.

Volunteers can stay as long or as little as they want.

Parent – how long is photo day? Is it all day?

Joe – no, usually till noon, we start as early as 8:30am.

Parent – is this for 5th grade graduation photos too?

Joe – no, those are taken on a separate day, letters will go out when that will take place. The 9th & 10th are for regular school day photos.

Parent – is there social media or website for the PA? Does a parent or the secretary handle it?

Joe – we don’t have social media, but we do have a blogsite that has all the information. Yvonne is the one who handles the PA blogsite.

Joe – Lisa, do we have a date for one of our biggest fundraisers which is our annual banquet.

Lisa – May 15, 2026 is the date for our annual banquet.

Joe – I know its far away but save the date, it will be fun. There you will see our children perform what they learned from all these amazing art programs.

Thank you for coming to our 1st meeting, does anyone have any questions?

Parent – the annual banquet is so late in the year, where or how does that money go to our children or does it carry over?

Joe – the money goes to all the things the school needs like replacing the air conditioners for the classroom and the supplies the office needs and all the little things. Everything in replaced in the school has to go through a union. It also goes to all the art programs and all the extra stuff for the children and events.

Parent – who approves the budget?

Joe – the board takes a vote on the budget which is approved by the parents who attend the meetings.

Parent – any updates on the playground? Joe – that is a question for Mr. Fong. Thank you for coming.
