Minutes to PS 130M General Meeting January 8, 2026

Attendance: Lisa Wong, Yvonne Moy, Amy Hu, Joseph Li, Michelle, Kevin Cheng, Manya Ellenberg, Alice Chen, Tammy Yin, Mr. Fong, Ms. Thomas, Carmen, Yuki, Ana and 6 other participants (see sign in sheet, in person)

Meeting Commence: 8:45am

Joe – Good morning, our Co-president Kevin will talk.

Kevin – Hi everyone, I’m Kevin, the Co-president. The reason why I joined the PA, it started due to me growing up in the public school system. I wanted my kids to join private school in the 1st& 2nd year of their school life. Private schools are half the size of this school. I love this community, the school, and the PA as well. For Kindergarten, private school is expensive. Now that I have a second kid, I said let’s try public school. I did my research and found PS. 130M with the PA open blogspot which has all the enrichment programs and logs of information on events that happen in the school. The enrichment programs are comparable to the ones that are offered in private schools. Luckily, I found this school, and we love it so far, so here we are.

Mr. Fong – Give a hand to Kevin. This is my last PA meeting; I have been here since 1997. I will still be around to help behind the scenes. I wanted to share our District 2 community meeting which will take place at our school on January 30, 2026, which will also be my last day at PS. 130M. Principals at PS. 1, PS. 2, PS. 42, PS. 124, PS 126, MS. 131, PS. 150 will all be here for the meeting. Everyone in the community has been invited, we hope all of you can come. There will be some refreshments. The chancellor wants to hear from the parents. We used to have 1000 students and now we have 500 students; the community has changed. If you would like to attend the D2 community meeting, please RSVP so we have some sort of head count. Thank you, my door is always open and Ms. Thomas.

Kevin – I’m going to hang on to your model Mr. Fong; “to lead is to serve”. Thank you. I will follow that model. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for him.

Agenda –
Reading and approval of minutes and Treasury reports, upcoming events. Parents’ Association opening & Review.

Here are last month’s meeting minutes to be reviewed and approved. They will be posted on the PA Blog site.

  1. These are the minutes for review and to be approved from our last meeting in December, 11 people approved the minutes; minutes are placed on record. Thank you!

  2. This is the treasury report for review and approval; 10 people approved the treasury report. The Treasury report is placed on record. Thank you!

These are the ongoing fundraising throughout the school year.

Kevin – I have a preview of the holiday show, I hope everyone came to see it, if you didn’t this would be a great time purchase the USB for the holiday show that just passed. Moe, a PA member, and her husband worked very hard to provide a new way to record our holiday shows. If you’re interested, you may purchase the newly recorded USB from Lisa in the PA room. You could buy a few of them and pass them out to family and friends.

We are currently at 40% of our goal amount, let’s try to reach our goal and beyond. This all helps with all our enrichment programs.

1. PA Fundraising for 2025-2026
    -  Bake Sale
    -  Candy Sale
    -  Annual Ask
    -  Photo day
    -  Scholastic Book Fair
    -  Spirit Clothes
    -  Holiday show
    -  Benefit Gala
    -  Mother’s Day
    -  Handmade Bead Sale
    -  Readathon

All the fundraising money goes to our kids and the art programs.

If you have any ideas, please let us know and we will see if we have the manpower to do it.

The banquet is on May 15, 2026, it is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year. We are taking donations for prizes to raffle off, if you have any unopen items, you don’t want or need, bring them in; you can even donate a car.

Joe – we recently did a popcorn fundraiser, how many of you bought and how did you like it?

Yuki – how did we do? Regarding sales.

Amy – not sure how well we did but my daughter loved the popcorn with chocolate drizzle on it.

Lisa – we get 50% profit.

Kevin – any questions?

Joe – any ideas?

2. The PA Funds these Programs and more

Here are all the costs of the arts programs the PA funds, as you see all the art programs are not cheap. All our fundraising efforts go back to the school and our students.

    Our Art Programs
        -  NDI – 1st grade & 4th grade - $15,325
        -  Inside Broadway – Pre-k / K/ 2nd Grade - $13,440
        -  Third Street Music School – Violin (3rd grade & Advance) - $10,050
        -  Ballroom Dancing - $9,520
        -  School Chorus – Voices of 130 - $0
        -  Spirit of PS 130 – Fife & Drum - $8,800
        -  Young People Chorus (YPC) - $9,900
        -  PS 130 Lion Dance - $4,275
        -  Rosie’s Theater Kids - $15,000

The PA also pays for some of the school supplies & special events such as:
        -  Air conditioners and repairs - $11,000
        -  Office copier, toners, computers, and supplies - $12,000
        -  Student appreciation events (we currently have 520 students)- $18,000

Kevin – At my first meeting I was baffled about the cost the PA covers for the school. I thought the DOE covers the school supplies, ACs, and copiers. I guess this is just the way things are, more of a reason to fundraise harder to ensure our children get what they need to learn in a comfortable environment.

        Upcoming events – January 2026
             -  Bake Sale – Wednesday, 1/14/26
             -  PS 130M school tour – Friday, 1/16/26
             -  D2 Community Coffee & Conversation Event at PS 130M – Friday, 1/30/26 – 8:45am to 10:30am
             -  PA - General Meeting – Thursday, 2/5/26
             -  23rd Annual Benefit Banquet – Friday, 5/15/26

Joe - Here are all the fun pictures from the banquet. You can see we also have our local seniors who perform at our banquet. Over the holidays we went over to the senior center on Grand St. to have our Voices carolers sing to them.

Kevin – I was honored to be able to attend. I grew up in a traditional Asian family, and my family was working in the restaurant, so we didn’t really celebrate the holidays. It was touching and amazing to be included in this holiday cheer.

Kevin – I’m an older millennial and Lisa our matriarch our chief in command are new to IG (Instagram) but we would like to promote the school on it. We would share snippets of what the school has been doing. I think it’s a great way to showcase the school in an amazing way.
